Day 1Brussels was essentially our last destination point on the trip as our return to London later that night was essentially going to be mostly a chance to get some sleep and pack before our flight. With that, we only had half a day in Brussels before taking that train to London.| We got into Brussels around lunch time and immediately set out on a quest to find Manneken Pis. Manneken Pis is a statue of a naked little boy taking a wizz and is one of the more famous landmarks in Brussels. The direct translation is actually "little man urinating." We wanted to see that statue itself, but we were also looking for it as a way to find downtown as that statue was right in the middle of the part of Brussels where we wanted to be. Unfortunately, after taking a train from the airport we ended up in a part of town where not a lot of people spoke English and when walking around asking for a naked little boy in a foreign country you have to be careful ... unless you're in Thailand. Anyway, after being put on the Belgian sexual predator list we finally found someone who knew what I was talking about and gave us directions. When we finally found the little boy, he was wearing a little stocking hat and it looks like he had just gotten back from the Gap. Apparently, it's a running joke in Brussels where they will dress up the little boy in different clothes and that he actually has several hundred separate outfits. When hearing this tidbit of information Colleen scoffed at his miniscule wardrobe and said he could learn a lot from her. |
When you got to go you got to go ... perpetually |
No need to see the menu, I'll just take a Sam Adams Light | Besides Manneken Pis, we were really interested in two main things in Brussels, beer and chocolate. We went to a couple chocolateers and gorged ourselves with chocolates of all shapes and sizes. By this point, we were very thirsty so we wanted to wash that chocolate down with at least 2000 kinds of beer ... but where were we going to go that had 2000+ beers. Luckily for us, Delirium Cafe was right down the street and they had the Guiness record for the most beers available under one roof. Delirium Cafe is a must for any beer drinker. They essentially hand you a tome at the bar where you can look through pages upon pages of beer. Colleen and I were like alcoholic children in a candy shop if that candy shop only served goodies that got you wasted. We stayed at Delirium Cafe for a few hours and then made our way to the train station to catch our train toLondon. |
